This paper presents the students with the challenge of designing interactive media environments of different types. The students are challenged to experiment beyond their previously acquired knowledge, designing for interactive computer screens and mobile devices.

Paper Structure

This paper is structured into three parts. The first part encourages reflection on existing work, examining the various components involved and their effect on the overall work; the second part involves building an interface design prototype. In part three students are guided through production of animations from concept to finished work. Overall the paper builds and extends design skills, with a particular focus in digital media output.

Students who successfully complete the paper should be able to:

  • Demonstrate the ability to apply a design process

    Working with text and image, students will demonstrate the ability to apply a design process to create a range of concepts

  • Demonstrate skills in creating interactive media
    Students will by completion of the assigned tasks, demonstrate successful operation of a range of software to create designs and basic prototypes through application of design principles and with awareness of industry practice.

  • Demonstrate the ability to create motion graphics using design software
    Working in two and three dimensions, students will demonstrate the creation of animated graphics using a variety of specified software tools in order to communicate specific messages.

Performance within the paper is determined through assessment of works produced in each component. Each component will include regular milestones for achievement documented in the provided briefing materials, lectures, studios, and also in the accompanying Moodle page for the paper. It is important to review all lecture material and participate in all studios in the paper in order to understand the content of the paper.
